The incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma is increasing and reaching more attention. The JGO journal recently published a focus issue on “Esophageal and Gastric Cancers”, led by Dr. Khaldoun Almhanna and Dr. Sarah Hoffe from H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, USA. We owe the success of this issue to Dr. Almhanna and Dr. Hoffe and all the authors contributed their articles to this issue.
This issue discusses the esophageal cancer management from three aspects: implications for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment; shares the endoscopic options for early stage esophageal cancer; analyzed clinical tools to predict outcomes in patients with esophageal cancer; reviewes the current status of novel agents and systemic treatment of gastric and esophageal adenocarcinoma, also shows the east vs. west perspective on surgical management of gastric cancer, as well as the postoperative chemoradiotherapy vs. preoperative chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced (operable) gastric cancer. There are also three original articles that authors share their experience in robotic assisted Ivor Lewis esophagectomy in the elderly patient; concurrent chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced resectable esophageal cancer and a nomogram predicting survival outcomes after definitive chemoradiation for esophageal cancer.
